Deep Point’s BBL Sydney Smash Preview: Sixers vs Thunder

Posted {{post.formattedDate}} by Darryl Woodford

The Sydney Smash just got a whole lot more interesting for coaches tonight with the winless Sixers expected to have at least four changes to their line-up.

Lyon, Denly, Braithwaite and Henriques are all expected to line-up in Magenta tonight while James Vince has recovered from his ‘cold’ (Ashes hammering) and should make his debut for the Thunder.

These in’s and their price tags make tonight’s game (as well as the double-header contests) very interesting – but where exactly will everyone bat and more importantly, how does anyone afford Uzzie at 24k???

Likely XI’s

Sixers: Denly, Hughes, Maddinson, Henriques, Silk, Braithwaite, Neville Botha, Dwarshius, Lyon, Bird, (Sams, Abbott)

Thunder:  Khawaja, Patterson, Watson, Vince, Ferguson, Nair, Lenton, Green, McClenaghan, Sandhu, Ahmed, (Rohrer, Fekete)

Joe Denly comes into the side for Jason Roy and should open. He usually bats #3 and Maddinson or Neville could be the ones to have the license at the top but I expect the overseas professional to take guard to start the innings.

Can’t find a place for Abbott here. Lyon goes straight in and Bird’s control and form at the SCG means he should get in ahead of Abbott who is needed less now that the Sixers have bolstered their batting.

Expect that Vince bats #4 giving Watson the most time at the crease. I can’t find a spot for Rohrer given the form of Sandhu but if Sandhu is omitted it means Watson will bowl his 4 overs.

Where does one start! Joe Denly is an overseas professional at 8k who should open so yeah there is some value there, not to mention he and Lenton are pretty much your only avenue to Khawaja. Moses Henriques represents extreme value tonight given Botha’s pre-game comments about Mo rolling the arm over.

For mine it’s still Shane Watson. Price drop a plus, may bowl but like Uzzie will take the game away from you if you miss and he goes big. If you are fading Uzzie then Watson is a must-have, taking them both just allows you to enjoy the Thunder innings from the very start. Nathan Lyon is extreme value at that price. His form in BBL particularly at the SCG has been amazing, and is maybe more value than must-have on what was a pretty un-SCG-like pitch, but only just.

James Vince first up at that price I’m looking elsewhere. If the Thunder top order fire he won’t get the exposure, if they fail he will be under extreme pressure. Some value if they bat first (and collapse) but there is so much value and/or premium priced players in this game that Vince doesn’t get a look in for mine. Ahmed also overs tonight against a stacked Sixers batting line-up. Yes it’s the SCG but I can’t have a spinner at that price on a pitch that one week ago was a road.

Usman Khawaja may be 24k but his 135pts first up at Spotless was nothing short of spectacular. At that price he is going to be difficult for players to fit in and should be less than 30% owned. Goes straight in for mine though, there is enough value about to compensate. Daniel Hughes’ 23pt average will have plenty of people staying away but I’m expecting the kid to have a good game tonight against a Thunder opening attack that I really don’t rate that highly. Jordan Silk should hold his place tonight but will be in the single digits in terms or ownership. If you like a Sixers top order collapse then Silk is your avenue to cashing.
